Spectacular pictures with HDR

Everyone who takes photos knows the problems with photos
that don’t reflect reality. This mainly occurs when the subject
has large differences in contrast, for instance when photographing
landscapes with against opposing light. If you try to compensate
for the light measured, the dark areas in the foreground quickly
turn too dark. The same problem occurs with evening shots or
shots inside buildings.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. In an HDR shot, you combine
multiple individual photos with different light settings, so that the
highly lit as well as the darker areas contain detail. With the help of
special software, such as Photomatix for instance, the separate shots
are processed into one picture.

The end result is really astonishing and gives a picture with a
dynamic range that cannot be achieved with one shot from a single digital camera, but what agrees with or even exceeds the range of our human eye. The example shows on the right the three photos from which the ultimate HDR photo (above) is made. Pictures © Jacques Joffre.
